Phoenix House is a Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) office in Barrow-in-Furness. The staff there have decades of experience in processing claims for industrial injuries benefits. The DWP has announced that this office will close, and that claims will now be processed by (already over-worked and under-trained) staff in an office in Barnsley, leaving the staff in Barrow faced with redundancy. As work has gradually shifted from from Barrow to Barnsley in recent months, we are already seeing a huge increase in error and delay in the processing of claims. In many cases asbestos victims are dying without the money to pay for care, heating or travel to hospital. It doesn’t have to this way. With enough will, an alternative to redundancy could be found, and this fantastic service for asbestos victims could be preserved. Please contact your local MP about this issue, sign this petition , and come to the protest in Barrow at 1.30pm on Saturday 15th October (at the Spirit of Barrow statue on Dalton Road).
