Stephan Schmidheiny, former main shareholder of asbestos company Eternit Italia, has been sentenced to 12 years in jail for the aggravated manslaughter of 392 asbestos victims in the town of Casale Monferrato in Italy. This result will inspire asbestos victims and anti-asbestos campaigners worldwide. It will strike fear in the hearts of those who profited (and continue to profit) from the deadly trade in asbestos.
The judge ordered Schmidheiny to pay €500m to a local association for relatives of victims of asbestos.
